Celebrating Christmas in the time of COVID-19

It seems that everything this year has had to be reimagined, reorganized, or postponed due to COVID-19. A time unlike any other, it is important that we focus on the good that can come from making new holiday traditions that will keep our loved ones safe and healthy. In Isaiah 41:10 Christ invites us to, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Do not let fear of the virus take away from the joy that Christmas brings! Though we may not be able to gather with family and friends face-to-face, there are many ways in which we can continue to focus on the reason for the season.

The CDC has great resources and suggestions for safe celebrations explained in full on their website. It is recommended that families host a virtual Christmas dinner. Make the event special by getting dressed up and cooking a smaller meal with members of your household. When it’s time to eat, video chat with family and friends and allow the conversation to be happy and light. That way, the holiday will feel as special as possible while keeping everyone healthy and safe. If your parish is livestreaming Mass online, consider attending virtually. Try to focus on the joy of the day, and establishing new traditions within your household.

The birth of Christ at Christmas is one of the most sacred times in our liturgical year. Make the most of the season with the circumstances given to you! As it says in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” From all of us here at Unity Catholic FCU, we wish you a very merry Christmas filled with joy, peace, and the fullness of the Father’s love!
