Ways to Help Local Businesses During the Pandemic

Now that May is upon us, businesses are starting to reopen for business and it is recovery time. Small, local businesses got hit the worst from the shutting down of walk-in business to facing re-structure, or even a complete shutdown of all business. Here are some ways to continue to support these businesses as they begin to reopen- without risking your health!

  • Order online! A lot of business, such as coffee shops and stores have offered online services so you can order whatever you would like! Some places will even ship it to you. I ordered coffee beans and chai tea mixes from one of my favorite local coffee shops and they delivered right to my doorstep!

  • Order for pick up! Many stores and most restaurants already have this option, but look to see what other stores are opening up for curbside pickup. Local business were hit the hardest, so if you have the option between a chain and a small business, try to opt for the small business!

  • Buy a gift card! If you are still wary about leaving the house, no worries! Get a gift card for when you do feel comfortable going out in public!

  • Tip BIG! Servers, delivery drivers and baristas are not only working fewer hours, they are also exposing themselves to the virus. Plus, they most likely don’t get sick leave. Since places have been doing carry out, tips are often forgotten! If you can afford it, leave a bigger tip than usual!

  • Buy direct! You can help small businesses by ordering or buying directly from their site instead of from a third party! Businesses who also sell on Amazon or a delivery service have to pay a small percentage of the sales price to the third party. Buying directly from the business means that your entire payment goes towards helping that small business.

  • Share with your friends on social media! Another great way to help businesses is to bring them more customers! Tell your friends and family members about your favorite stores and restaurants. Share your experiences on their Facebook pages too.

As businesses begin to reopen, remember that every little bit helps, even if it is just a referral to a friend! Supporting local means that you are helping your community navigate these difficult times. There isn’t a better way to pay it forward than to help a business who has always been there for you.
